Object Focus: Accordion Album of Calligraphy by Seyh Hamdullah

Celebrated calligrapher Şeyh Hamdullah (1436-1520), known as the father of Ottoman Calligraphy, established a tradition of calligraphy that is still practiced by artists today. His works are prominent in an accordion album, Album of Ottoman Calligraphy, which is one of only three known pieces in the United States that includes the innovative calligrapher’s signature. Join world-renowned calligrapher Mohamad Zakariya; Ashley Dimmig, Wieler-Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow in Islamic Art; Aisha Imam, Reed Society for the Sacred Arts; and independent scholar Nancy Micklewright in a virtual exploration of this important calligraphy album in the Walters collection, followed by a discussion of Şeyh Hamdullah’s legacy and the living art practice of Islamic calligraphy in the mid-Atlantic region.

This is one of the most famous qaseedas in the world today, still sung 1400 years later. Qaseedas are songs of devotion that celebrate the life of the Prophet and are an important part of Islamic heritage. This fall, we offer a unique opportunity to girls ages nine and up to learn with the co-leader of the Zaynab Ensemble, Fatimah Bromund. We invite young girls to meet in Bethesda, Maryland to learn the origins and background of qaseeda through stories and age appropriate activities and learn a repertoire of qaseedas that they commit to memory and enjoy singing on their own. An excellent way to meet other young Muslim girls in the area and create some good friendships.

About the instructor: Fatimah Bromund is a rising senior at the University of Maryland. She has 8 years of experience working with youth, including working as a teacher at the Islamic Community Center of Potomac Sunday school. Having studied classical Arabic, Quran and tajweed since early childhood, she also privately tutors students in Quranic and Islamic Studies.

Fatimah recites Classical Arabic qaseedas and co-leads the Zaynab Ensemble, an all-girls nasheed group formed in 2013. She also plays the darbuka, a classic Arab drum that often accompanies the qaseeda tradition, alongside her singing.

Beauty in Solitude: Khalid Casado

Master calligrapher Khalid Casado offers an introductory class to the art of Islamic calligraphy.

Master calligrapher Khalid Casado, based in Madrid, shares his work from the Beauty in Solitude online exhibition and will lead attendees on an introductory session of the art of Islamic calligraphy. 

Khalid was born in 1982 in Spain where he has lived and developed both personally and academically. He worked for several years in his family business, a pharmacy, run first by his grandfather and then by his father. In 2009, he met Nuria García who later became his mentor and master. Guided by her, he traveled to Istanbul and became acquainted with her masters. This is how he began his first lessons with the master calligrapher Davut Bektas, and always under the supervision of master Hasan Çelebi.

Two years later, he started taking lessons from the master calligrapher Ferhat Kurlu who, along with Nuria, became one of his strongest influences. In 2014, and after having devoted himself completely to learning this art, he received his icazet or calligraphy diploma in sülüs and nesih scripts. In 2015, he traveled for the first time to the USA and met the master calligrapher Mohammed Zakariya, a person who has also inspired and influenced his work. Currently, he works as a calligrapher and, following the tradition, he keeps in touch with his masters in order to keep learning and being inspired by them. Beauty in Solitude Dialogues: The Curator and the Calligrapher

Met curator Dr. Maryam Ekhtiar in conversation with Paris-based master calligrapher Nuria Garcia Masip.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art in NYC has one of three Seyh Hamdullah albums in the United States, a stunning set of folios framed by striking ebru. Dr. Maryam Ekhtiar, a curator in the Department of Islamic Art at the Met will be discussing this work with Nuria Garcia Masip who is a master calligrapher practicing and teaching the art of Arabic calligraphy. Be sure to tune in for images never before seen of the Seyh Hamdullah piece and lively conversation with two experts in this field. 

Currently Curator in the Department of Islamic Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, Dr. Maryam Ekhtiar began working at the museum in 2003 as a specialist in the field of nineteenth century Persian art and culture, calligraphy, and later Persian painting. She received her Ph.D. from the Department of Middle Eastern Studies at New York University in 1994 and has worked and taught at various museums and universities, namely the Brooklyn Museum, New York University, and Swarthmore College. 

Dr. Ekhtiar has organized several exhibitions, lectured and published widely. She has co-edited several books including, Royal Persian Paintings: The Qajar Epoch 1785-1925 (1998), Masterpieces from the Department of Islamic Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art (2011), Art of the Islamic World: A Resource for Educators (2012) Her latest book, How to Read the Art of Islamic Calligraphy, was published by the Met in 2018.

Nuria Garcia Masip is a calligrapher and doctoral candidate in Art History at Sorbonne University. She has won prestigious prizes in international calligraphy competitions and her work forms part of various private and museum collections. She studied under master calligrapher Mohamed Zakariya and later traveled to Istanbul where she continued her study with masters Hasan Celebi and Davut Bektas. In 2007, she received her diploma (ijazah) in the thuluth and naskh scripts signed by her three teachers. Apart from her calligraphic work and research, she has organized numerous workshops and lectures on this art to promote the art of calligraphy internationally.

Join us on a journey into the Sufi music of the Indian Subcontinent. Meet with Dhruv Sangari, also known as Bilal Chishty for a virtual live session every Sunday as he delves deep into the origin and culture of Qawwali music, sharing the lives and words of the saints and mystics whose poetry is eternally captured in voices of the Qawwals. Go beyond the grooves and chords, come enter the meaning, context and soundscape of timeless devotion.

Module 1

Session 1: Origin Story: Tracing the roots of Chishty Sufi Sema & Qawwali to its homelands. Introduction by Dr. Ali Asani, Prof of of Indo-Muslim Religion and Cultures at Harvard University.

Session 2: The River of Love: Situating Sufi music in Indo- Persian Culture and its refinement under Amir Khusrau. Guest speaker: Dr. Ali Asani

Session 3: Thought Progression: Exploring the many sub-genres and musical modes that make up Qawwali.

Session 4: Beholden to Thee: Revisiting the lives of some of the greatest Sufi Saints and an introduction to select compositions sung in their praise to this day.

Session 5: I Shall Play Holi saying Bismillah: An in-depth look at the shared, syncretic heritage fostered by the Sufi orders and the vast repertoire of linguistically diverse poetry the Qawwals command.

Session 6: Merry Wanderer: Following the practices and musical expression of the antinomian and folkloristic Sufi-Bhakti mendicants.

Session 7: The Maqam of the Raga: Further exploring and practicing some of the important scales and modes associated with Qawwali and their spiritual significance in Sufi cosmology and meditative systems.

Session 8: Call of the Beloved: paying a virtual visit to the shrine of Khawaja Nizamuddin Auliya and Hazrat Amir Khusrau, a place where our journey truly began. Alongside Ustadh Dhruv, Anas Khan, anthroplogist and writer based in Delhi from @unzip_delhi will take us on a ziyara to the shrine and share his knowledge and field questions with students in the final session.

About Ustadh Bilal Chisty:

Dhruv Sangari (Bilal Chishty) is an authentic Sufi qawwal and classical Indian vocalist, composer, teacher and scholar based in New Delhi, India. He has been performing professionally since 2001. Dhruv began training in Hindustani classical music at the age of 7 under Shahana Bannerjee and learning the tabla with Pandit B.S. Ramanna. Drawn to Sufism and its music from an early age, Dhruv began visiting the courtyard of the shrine of Saint Nizamuddin Auliya. Here, he met the late Ustad Meraj Ahmed Nizami of the Delhi Qawwalbachhe lineage who agreed to become his teacher. A meeting with the legendary maestro late Ustad Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan, and his brother the late Ustad Farrukh Fateh Ali Khan, led Dhruv to become their disciple as well, and solidified his bond with qawwali and Sufi music. In addition to the Delhi Gharana, his stylistic and improvisational nuances are greatly inspired by the Punjab Senia Gharana school of music. Dhruv’s repertoire includes Farsi, Arabic, Punjabi, Urdu and Hindi verses from the works of famed poets and saints such as Baba Farid, Amir Khusrau, Mirabai, Maulana Rumi, Maulana Jami, Bulleh Shah, Guru Nanak, Kabir Das, Saim Chishty, Allama Iqbal, Mirza Ghalib, Bedil and Shah Niyaz among many others.

About Dr. Ali Asani:

Dr. Asani is Murray A. Albertson Professor of Middle Eastern Studies and Professor of Indo-Muslim and Islamic Religion and Cultures and the Director of Prince Alwaleed bin Talal Islamic Studies Program at Harvard University. The recipient of several awards and grants, Dr. Asani is the author of many artucles and books on the devotional literature of Muslim communities. He is particularly interested in the arts, broadly defined, as the primary means by which Muslims have experienced their faith and their potential as pedagogic bridges to foster a better understandings of the Islamic tradition.

Beauty in Solitude Dialogues: The Curator and the Calligrapher

Continuing our series of dialogues for Beauty in Solitude, an online exhibition, we invite you to another conversation, this time between Detroit-based calligrapher, Dr. Nihad Dukhan and the Curator of Islamic Manuscripts Collection at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, Evyn Kropf.

Evyn Kropf curates the Islamic Manuscripts Collection preserved in the Special Collections Research Center at U of M. She will share a treasure trove of images by Seyh Hamdullah, one of the richest collections of Seyh Hamdulla folios in the United States. She partners with other colleagues to ensure that collections of manuscripts and other materials are preserved and accesible for scholarship, appreciation and other inspiration long into the future. As a specialist of Islamic codicology and Arabic manuscript culture, she has many interests including writing material, reading and collecting practices of the Ottoman era as well as the significance of pictograms and other visual contend for Sufi knowledge transmission.

Dr. Nihad Dukhan is Palestinian-American master of Arabic and Islamic calligraphy. He is also a professor of mechanical engineering at University of Detroit Mercy. His interest in calligraphy began when he was in the sixth grade in Gaza, Palestine. He studied with the noted Istanbul grand master calligrapher Hasan Çelebi (pronounced Chalabi) in Thuluth and Naskh styles and received his ijazah (master of calligraphy degree) in 2009 after 11 years of study. He also studied Taliq style with master calligrapher Mohamed Zakariya, and received his second ijazah in 2013. Between 2013 and 2015, Dukhan relocated to Istanbul where he received advanced training under guidance of master calligrapher Davud Bektaş in Jaly Thuluth style.His work has been exhibited in US cities and in Istanbul, Turkey. His designs are sold in the US, Europe, the Middle East and Japan.

Join us for a virtual dialogue between Dr. Emin Lelic and Ashley Dimmig as they discuss Seyh Hamdullah’s calligraphy piece from the Walters Art Museum and Mohamed Zakariya’s work from Reed Society’s Beauty in Solitude Exhibition.

Dr. Ashley Dimmig is currently the Wieler-Mellon Postdoctoral Curatorial Fellow in Islamic Art at the Walters Art Museum. Her curatorial work aims to make Islamic art engaging and accessible to audiences in Baltimore and beyond. Within the broad scope of Islamic art history, her fields of specialization include a range of art and architecture from Turkish and Persian spheres in the early modern and modern periods.

Dr. Emin Lelić is a board member of Reed Society and a student of Mohamed Zakariya. He received his doctorate from the University of Chicago, where he defended his dissertation on occult sciences in the Ottoman Empire. His interests include calligraphy, Ottoman, Islamic, Middle Eastern and Balkan history and literature, and horseback riding. He is currently an Assistant Professor in the History Department at Salisbury University.

Peter Sanders and Michael Sugich share their work with the Nation's capital.
Thurgood Marshall Center for Service and Heritage was built as the first YMCA for the African American community. Designed by W. Sidney Pittman, one of the first African American architects as well as Booker T. Washington's son in law. Bustling in the 1920s and 1930s, many prominent community members came through this building and to this day, the poet Langston Hughes’ room is preserved on the second floor. This center is now a National Historic Landmark and strives to be a beacon for community service serving youth and families.

Peter Sanders is an accomplished author who began his photographic career documenting London’s rock scene in the 1960s, then turned to capturing his spiritual journey on film for over 45 years. He will share his new book Meeting with Mountains: Encounters with Saints and Sages of the Islamic World.

Michael Sugich is a professional writer and communication advisor for 40 years. He is an author of three books and will be sharing his latest one, Hearts Turn: Sinners, Seekers, Saints, and the Road to Redemption.
